Details of 'Gainful Use of TSA 2021 Materials' STAR Online Mode (Updates on 14 May 2021)

Schools opting for ‘Gainful Use of TSA 2021 Materials’ STAR Online Mode can refer to the following information about the arrangements and support.

 

About STAR Online Mode

  • STAR Online Mode is applicable to all subjects and sub-papers (except for the Writing sub-paper of language subjects);
  • Students’ submitted answers will be marked by the system of the STAR platform automatically;
  • Schools can obtain feedback within a short period of time, while students can view their individual report;
  • With regard to the listening assessment of the language subjects, schools may use the newly added feature of centralised broadcasting to allow the whole level / class to conduct the listening assessment(s) together. Please click here for more details of centralised broadcasting.
     

Flow of STAR Online Mode

1. Preparation before the assessment

A. Submit reply slip and participation details

  • Select the dates, mode and subjects of assessment materials to be used on the HKEAA’s online form

B. Confirm Assessment Administration Coordinator details

  • Assessment Administration Coordinator is responsible for coordinating the participation within the school and sharing reports to the related teachers; please click here to confirm the Assessment Administration Coordinator’s EdCity teacher account details

C. Check accounts and equipment

  • School Administrator updates their teacher and student account information through EdCity’s ‘School Accounts Administration System’, and distribute the account information to the teachers and students
  • Check the school’s WiFi network and corresponding equipment (e.g. computers / tablets / students’ BYOD devices / speakers for centralised broadcasting)

D. Conduct trial assessment

E. Check assessment materials

  • The system will directly distribute the assessment materials to the teacher and student accounts
  • Teachers can log in to STAR platform to verify if the assessment materials are properly distributed according to the name of the assessment materials and the info of students who have been distributed the materials on the following dates:
     
    • Primary 3: 2 June 2021
    • Primary 6: 9 June 2021
    • Secondary 3: 16 June 2021
  • Note: Teachers can only preview the assessment materials content from 8 am onwards on the assessment day

2. Arrangements on the assessment day

A. Preview assessment materials content

  • From 8 am onwards on the assessment day, teachers can log in to STAR platform to preview the assessment materials content

B. Students do the assessments

  • During the time slot in the lesson arranged by the teacher, students log in to the STAR platform, go to the ‘Assessment resources 2021’ tab page, locate and access the assigned assessment materials by its name, and click ‘Attempt’ to start the assessment
  • If your school intends to carry out listening assessments by centralised broadcasting, teachers can use the paper preview function to play the assessments’ audio files in lesson. Please click here for details

C. View students’ submission status

  • Teachers can view students’ real-time submission status (including number of answered questions, students’ answers and submission time) in the ‘Quick Report’, so as to avoid situations such as when a student submits an unfinished assessment by mistake
  • In the case of abnormal submission by students (e.g. when a student has clicked the ‘submit’ button by mistake before finishing the assessment), teachers can reset a student’s submission status on the day of assessment for the student to continue with the assessment. Please notify the HKEAA if such arrangements have been made. Please note: this function can only be applied on the day of the assessment (till 11 pm)

3. Student Reports

A. View the student reports

  • Assessment Administration Coordinator can view ‘student report’ on the following dates:
     
  • Primary 3: 28 June 2021
  • Primary 6: 6 July 2021
  • Secondary 3: 12 July 2021
     
  • When the Assessment Administration Coordinator has received the reports, students can also view their ‘individual report’

    (For the schools which the assessment day of Primary 3 students is on or after 28 June 2021, student reports will be distributed to the Assessment Administration Coordinator as well as the students who had attempted the assessment in the next day of the assessment day)

B. Share student reports

  • The Assessment Administration Coordinator can share reports with teachers within the school if needed. Please refer to the video guide of Share Papers for more details

Support for Participating Schools

EdCity provides participating schools with the following support regarding the ‘Gainful Use of TSA 2021 Materials’ STAR Online Mode:

1. Trial Arrangement

EdCity has provided schools with the trial assessment materials with a view to familiarising teachers and students with the operation of the STAR platform, types of items and the feature of centralised broadcasting. Teachers can log in to the STAR platform using teacher accounts to distribute the trial assessment materials to students on the platform. Please click the following links to view the user guide.

EdCity is organising ‘STAR Workshops’ for teachers to learn how to use the STAR platform, as well as enhance the understanding of assessment literacy. Details:

  • The launch of STAR 2.0 to progressively cover full curriculum (Updates on 6 October 2020)
    The STAR platform is upgraded to 2.0 on 6 October 2020. STAR 2.0 will progressively extend the coverage from Basic Competencies to full curriculum of Chinese Language, English Language and Mathematics, with new and enhanced features added by phases. Please CLICK HERE for details.

  • EDB released the revised Mathematics Education Key Learning Area Curriculum Guide (Primary 1 – Secondary 6) and the revised KS1 Mathematics curriculum in 2017. The relevant sets of Basic Competency descriptors have been updated. In response to the above revision, starting from 11 November 2019, teachers can select either Basic Competency (2017) or Basic Competency (2000) as the question coverage when adding new papers.
